The Decline (and Fall?) of the American Actor'

In October of 1944, an American actor took to the stage on Broadway in a play titled 'I Remember Mama' in a supporting role. It wasn't a scene stealing role per se but by all accounts people couldn't take their eyes off of him. There was just something about his behavior...like he had wandered onto the stage from real life and wasn't aware there was anyone watching him. Audience members ruffled their programs and tried to figure out where this kid came from?
